I bought this book when it first came out. My painting teacher Paul Wieghart had been a student of Klee at the Bauhaus. Paul was able to point out the formal properties of Klee and how he organized color. This book goes into the complex infuences on Klee: Ensor,Breughel,Bosch,Seurat,Cubism,Chirico. This is one of the first monographs on the artist. I would rate it in a tie with Will Grohmans book .Another book I like is Erik Jardi's book for the reproductions of his work.. I am very fortunate to have purchased this book in 1952.This book is worth much more than nine dollars..Welcker writes clearly and concisely about the many approaches of Klee. Because, of this book Klee became more popular and understood.Klee was an intellectual artist, many people in the art world by passed this great artist because they did not have the mind to deal with an artist of this depth and complexity.
