Flowers By Giorgio Morandi Details
From Library Journal Morandi was an Italian painter and printmaker active from the 1920s until his death in 1968. Although never more than moderately prominent in this country, he is best known for modernist landscapes in the tradition of Cezanne. In this volume Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon presents 40 etchings and oil paintings of flowers by Morandi and 20 sepia photographs taken in Morandi's former studios by Folon. The text is a rambling conglomeration of Folon's thoughts on such subjects as the dust in Morandi's studio, Folon's travels with his girlfriend Paola (the daughter of Morandi's former dealer Ghiringhelli), the 1980 terrorist attack on the Bologna train station, and the stars in the sky. Though some will find Folon's prose moving, its maudlin self-indulgence will be an obstacle to many. This is not an important acquisition for any but comprehensive collections. Kathryn W.
